Welcome
Consolidated Electric is a not-for-profit electric utility owned by the consumer-members who use the electricity and other services it provides. Headquartered in Mexico, Missouri, the cooperative serves parts of Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike and Ralls Counties. CEC currently serves more than 7,840 meters for homes, farms, businesses and industry members and maintains more than 2,240 miles of energized power lines.
It's almost time to move...
Just one short year ago members were notified that the board of directors had determined the time had come to build a new Cooperative headquarters. It is now that we find ourselves ahead of the initial construction schedule and ready to move into that new building.
The Cooperative will be closed on Friday, January 20, 2012 to allow employees time to relocate their offices. Members needing to report outages or emergencies during this time can call 573-581-3630 or 1-800-621-0091.
The new office is located directly east of the old office building and will be open for business at 7:30 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2012.
Why does Consolidated Electric Cooperative support early site permit legislation for a nuclear power plant? Because it is in the best interests of our member-owners.
- Missouri's 650,000 plus rural electric cooperative member-owners currently rely on coal-based generation for almost 80% of their electric needs.
- We must invest in new safe, reliable and affordable baseload generation capacity by 2023 - demand for electriciy continues to grow despite the recent economic downturn.
- Proposed federal environmental regulations and carbon cap-and-trade proposals are designed to make low cost coal-fired baseload generation a thing of the past - we must have other options.
- Continuing with our energy efficieny programs, investments in renewables, and trying to find economical ways to keep our older coal-fired plants in compliance with new federal regulations, just won't be enough.
- As of today only natural gas and nuclear power plants are viable and realistic options for our future baseload power needs but price volatility in the natural gas market and incrasing demand for natural gas makes diversification of our energy portfolio to include nuclear generation the most prudent course.
- While the cost of delivered nuclear energy is relatively low and stable, the cost of constructing a nuclear power plant is high-we cannot do it alone and must partner with other utilities in order to minimize the rate impact on our members-owners.
- In addition to the many economic benefits it will bring, constructing a new nuclear plant in Missouri ensures our energy independence-we do not want to be captive to suppliers in other states for our future energy needs.
- This legislation 1) enables all segments of Missouri's electric industry to join together to take the first necessary step in preserving the nuclear energy option for Missouri, 2) reduces the rate impact to the individual ratepayer by spreading the cost of the permit across several utilities, 3) positions the state to take strategic advantage of potential federal "clean energy" incentives-all to the shared benefit of Missouri's electric consumers, regardless of their supplier.
GIS Field Inventory Is Taking Place
In an effort to better serve the membership in a more efficient and productive manner, Consolidated Electric Cooperative is implementing a Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS is a digital mapping system that will provide CEC employees with detailed information about our electrical network and its operation. Learn more about why you may see contractors working in your area.
